They consist of β- (1,4)-linked d -xylopyranosyl residues to which arabinofuranosyl moieties are attached. They are degraded in the colon by specific intestinal bacteria possessing AX-degrading enzymes. Oligosaccharides can have many functions including cell recognition and cell binding. For example, glycolipids have an important role in the immune response. They are normally present as glycans : oligosaccharide chains linked to lipids or to compatible amino acid side chains in proteins , by N - or O - glycosidic bonds . Arabinoxylan oligosaccharides (AXOS) are considered as DF with prebiotic potential, but so far no studies have investigated their metabolic effects in humans.
