The regress argument (also known as the diallelus (Latin < Greek di allelon "through or by means of one another")) is a problem in epistemology and, in general, a problem in any situation where a statement has to be justified. According to this argument, any proposition requires a justification. However, any justification itself requires support.

Se hela listan på plato.stanford.edu The regress argument is a problem that occurs within theories of knowledge that define knowledge to have justification for belief as a requisite. If all beliefs must be justified, even the justifying beliefs, then either the chain of justifcation ends with an unjustified belief, a circular justification (X is justified by Y, Y is justified by Z, Z is justified by Y) or an infinte regress of justification.

The regress argument must, however, predate Agrippa, as Aristotle was aware of it and argued that knowing does not necessitate an infinite regress because some knowledge does not depend on demonstration: Some hold that, owing to the necessity of knowing the primary premises, there is no scientific knowledge.

Maybe, on a given occasion, catching the Dogmatist in an infinite regress, or in a reciprocal argument, will prompt the skeptic to think "I might as well believe the opposite" -- and that, coupled with the Dogmatist's positive argument, will count as a case of "equal strength". Of course, this might not satisfy a logically scrupulous philosopher. 2012-09-28 "But why?". In this Wireless Philosophy video, Kevin McCain (University of Alabama at Birmingham) explains the Epistemic Regress Problem.

The argument can be seen as a response to the The Infinite Regress Argument The infinite regress argument is an argument for general skepticism, but Walter Sinnott-Armstrong has adapted the argument to morality and suggests that “If the problems raised by these arguments cannot be solved at least in morality, then we cannot be justified in believing any moral claims” (9). One of Dick's arguments against the existence of God is critically examined and evaluated.

One of the key parts of the argument involves the rejection of the infinite regress, arguing that it is not possible to have an infinite number of causes or movers. Infinite Regress is a theory often criticised by philosophers that aims to explain the cause of existence and time. The theory of Infinite Regress suggests that time has been in an eternal cycle that possesses neither beginning nor end, and due to this it does not require an efficient cause.
